Energy Flow Flashcards
(29 cards)
Say it with me: All organisms need _____
ENERGY!!!!!!
How and what do plants use energy from?
Plants use energy from the
Sun during photosynthesis
What is burnt and when? (vague ik)
The glucose is then used to make carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and everything else the plant needs.
autotrophs
make their own food (plant)
heterotrophs
need ready made food
A plant’s proteins, lipids, etc. become…
the components of food for consumers
Food is a store of…
chemical potential energy
How do consumers obtain their food?
from food made by plants, either directly or indirectly
As consumers feed on plants, what is passed to them?
BACK TO ENERGYYYY
What is used to support all life processes?
the energy released from food
what does respiration do?
Respiration releases the chemical energy stored in food so that it can be used by the organism
when does a plant gain energy?
A plant gains energy when it converts light energy to chemical potential energy during photosynthesis
what does a plant store
It stores some of the energy by changing the glucose into carbs, lipids and yk other said chemicals
what does a plant use up
it uses up some of the food during respiration to let go energy to grow and carry out other life processes (I process life sometimes… all the time)
how does a plant lose energy
some of the energy released is lost and labelled as as heat energy in respiration (sarcasm ugh labels smh stop labeling things plants have feeling too yk)
How is energy gained in an animal
energy is gained as the animals feeds (FEEDING TIMEEE… bro I’m hungry
The animal’s energy is stored
as it grows (grow grow grow ur… animal? gently down the… land?/sea)
the energy is lost as
faeces or urine… yk waste
How do animals lose energy
Some of the stored energy is released during respiration for the organism to stay alive… yk live, sumn I’ve never done… and some of the energy is lost as heat to the environment (is it hot in here or is it just an animal losing stored energy am I right)
What to do next(not a real question)
Look at the pics on slides for better demonstration
What happens to each subsequent trophic level
Less energy is available to each
Ecosystems usually contain a _____ number of small organisms and a ______ number of large animals
large number of small organisms and a smaller number of large animals
Predators are usually ______ than prey and…
Predators are usually larger than their prey and must eat a number of them to stay alive
All of the number of organisms info we talked about so far can be represented in a diagram called
a pyramid of numbers
