Energy Glossary Flashcards
(21 cards)
What does biomass mean
The dry mass of energy in an organis.
What does chemical
store mean
Energy that is stored in food, batteries or fuels.
What does conduction mean
The movement of heat through solids.
What does convection mean
The movement of heat through liquids and gases.
What does dissipated mean
Energy that spreads out into the environment.
What does elastic store mean
Energy that is stored when an object has changed
shape - for example, a spring or elastic band.
What does emit mean
To release or give out.
What does energy mean
There are many different types of energy for example heat and light. The unit of energy is the joule.
What are fossil fuels
Coal, oil and gas – these were formed from dead
animal and plants over millions of years.
What is gravitational
potential
This type of energy is possessed by anything which
can fall.
What is infrared
radiation
Radiation given off by the sun.
What is joule
The unit of energy; the symbol for it is J.
What is kilowatts
The symbol is KW
1 KW= 100
What is kilojoule
The symbol is KJ
1000J=1KJ
What is kinetic
energy
This type of energy relates to anything that
is moving.
What is nuclear energy
This is released from nuclear reactions.
What is radiation
The transfer of heat as a wave. Heat radiation is
affected by surface, colour and texture.
What is renewable
Energy sources that will not run out - for example,
solar or tidal energy.
What is temperature
How hot or cold something is, measured in 0C.
What is a thermometer
A device that can be used to measure temperature.
What is a watts
The unit of power – the symbol is W.
