Energy in the Atmosphere Flashcards
(14 cards)
What does CFC stand for?
Chlorofluorocarbon
Where does the energy in our atmosphere come from?
The sun
What is CFC?
It keeps aerosol products cold
What are the two main greenhouse gasses?
1) methane
2) carbon dioxide
What is radiation?
The direct transfer of of energy by electromagnetic waves
What visible light has the shortest wavelength?
violet (shortest)
ex. roy g biv but backwards
What is “infrared”?
Infrared is a form of energy with wavelengths that are longer than red light
What is “ultraviolet”?
Ultra violet is a form of energy with wavelengths that are shorter than violet light
What is visible light?
It is a mixture of all the colors in the spectrum
How are we destroying the ozone layer?
With CFC (chlorofluorocarbons)
Why is the sky blue?
Blue wavelengths through the air particles
How does the sun’s energy get to earth?
Energy travels through electromagnetic waves
Name two negative effects of global warming:
1) as the water is warmed, it would expand, raising the sea levels around the world
2) glaciers and polar ice caps might melt partially which would increase sea level more
Name two positive effects of global warming:
1) farmers in cool areas can plant two crops a year
2) places too cold for farming could become farmland
