Power vs Capacity
Power = rate at which ATP can be produced
Max Capacity = total potential for ATP production when product is completely broken down
Short-duration, high intensity exercise
Creatine Phosphate and fast glycolysis
Long duration, low-moderate intensity exercise
Most ATP produced via aerobic glycolysis and FA oxidation
Muscle Fuel Source:
- low intensity exercise
- moderate intensity
- high intensity
LOW: plasma FFAs (minimal reliance on muscle glycogen)
MOD: plasma glycogen increases and starts to rely on muscle glycogen stores
HIGH: muscle glycogen
** Muscles use more glycogen and less fat at higher exercise intensities !
Energy Source for Endurance Exercise
Increased reliance on muscle glycogen. Over time, reliance is predominantly on blood glucose and FAs.
Carbs ingestion increases plasma glucose oxidation and reduces early glycogen utilisation and late FFA oxidation
