energy types Flashcards
(25 cards)
gravitational energy
an energy that is related to gravitational force or to gravity.
radiant energy
the physical energy resulting from electromagnetic radiation, usually observed as it radiates from a source into the surrounding environment.
chemical energy
energy stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules
thermal energy
the energy contained within a system that is responsible for its temperature
elastic energy
energy stored in an object due to a force that temporarily changes its shape, such as squashing or stretching
nuclear energy
a form of energy released from the nucleus, the core of atoms, made up of protons and neutrons
geothermal energy
heat energy from the earth
sound energy
Sound energy is the energy that we create when sound waves move outward from a vibrating article or sound source.
mechanical energy
sum of the kinetic energy, or energy of motion, and the potential energy, or energy stored in a system by reason of the position of its parts.
hydroelectric energy
a form of renewable energy that uses the water stored in dams, as well as flowing in rivers to create electricity in hydropower plants.
series circuits
all components are connected end-to-end to form a single path for current flow
parallel circuits
comprises branches so that the current divides and only part of it flows through any branch.
circuit basic components
power source, connector, load, control.
Rube Goldberg Machine
chain reaction–type machine or contraption intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way.
6 simple machines
pulley, lever, wheel, and axle, wedge, inclined plane, screw.
pulley
a wheel that carries a flexible rope, cord, cable, chain, or belt on its rim.
lever
a simple machine made of a rigid beam and a fulcrum
wheel and axle
The wheel and axle is a type of simple machine used to make tasks easier in terms of manipulating force by applying the concept of mechanical advantage
inclined plane
consisting of a sloping surface, used for raising heavy bodies
screw
a mechanism that converts rotational motion to linear motion, and a torque (rotational force) to a linear force
wedge
a simple machine used to separate two objects, or portions of objects, through the application of force
power source
pushes the electricity through the circuit.
connectors
connect all parts to create the path for electricity to travel through
load
the thing that is being powered by the electricity in a circuit
