Energy types Flashcards
(11 cards)
Kinetic energy
The energy of motion. Anything that is moving has kinetic energy.
Thermal energy
The energy an object has due to the movement of its particles. The faster the particles move, the more thermal energy the object has.
Chemical energy
The energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds. This energy is released or absorbed during chemical reactions.
Electrical energy
The energy caused by the movement of electrons in a conductor.
Nuclear energy
The energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. This energy is released during nuclear reactions, like fission (splitting of atoms) or fusion (combining atoms).
Sound energy
The energy produced by vibrating objects that cause particles in the surrounding medium (like air, water, or solids) to vibrate as well, creating sound waves.
Gravitational potential energy
A form of potential energy related to the height of an object in a gravitational field. The higher an object, the more gravitational potential energy it has.
Elastic potential energy
The energy stored in objects that can be stretched or compressed, like springs or rubber bands.
Magnetic energy
Energy stored within magnetic fields. Objects that are magnetized can have magnetic energy due to the alignment of their magnetic fields.
Light energy
Light energy is a type of electromagnetic energy that travels in waves and can be seen by the human eye. It’s the energy that makes things visible and includes all the different types of light, from visible light to ultraviolet and infrared light.
Heat
It is a transfer type of thermal energy.
