Energy Types and Transformation Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is Energy?
Energy = ability to do work.
What are the two types of energy?
Potential energy = stored energy
Kinetic energy = energy of moving objects.
What is Kinetic Energy?
Kinetic Energy involves movement.
What is Translational Kinetic Energy?
Energy from an object’s movement.
Example: Speeding cars, cyclonic winds.
What is Light Energy?
Energy that warms and heats.
Example: Light bulbs, energy from the Sun.
What is Thermal/Heat Energy?
Energy that heats or melts.
Example: Wood fire, rubbing hands.
What is Sound Energy?
Energy from vibrating air, enabling sound.
Example: Playing guitar, radio.
What is Electrical Energy?
Energy that pushes electric current through a wire.
Example: TVs, computers.
What is Potential Energy?
Stored energy that an object has when it’s not moving but is ready to be used.
What are examples of Potential Energy?
Example: raised object, dynamite, drawn bow, battery, stretched spring.
What is Gravitational Potential Energy?
Energy from lifting an object above the ground.
Example: Ball above ground.
What is Chemical Potential Energy?
Energy stored in fuels, released as light and heat when burned.
Example: Petrol, gas, wood.
What is Magnetic Potential Energy?
Energy from magnetic fields, when opposite poles attract.
What is Elastic Potential Energy?
Energy in stretched or compressed objects. Converts to kinetic energy when released.
What is Nuclear Potential Energy?
Energy stored in atoms.
Example: Sun’s hydrogen, uranium in power and bombs.
How is energy measured?
Energy is measured in joules (J).
What is 1 joule equivalent to?
1 joule = energy to lift 1 kg by about 10 cm.
What is the conversion of joules to kilojoules?
1000 J = 1 kilojoule (kJ).
What is the conversion of kilojoules to megajoules?
1000 kJ = 1 megajoule (MJ).
What is Energy Transfer?
Passing energy from one object to another.
Example: Kinetic energy from feet to ball.
What is Energy Transformation?
Changing energy from one form to another.
Example: Electrical energy → sound, light, heat (TV, tablet, computer).
