What is Concrete Poetry?
Poetry which depends in part upon the arrangement of words and letters to convey meaning. Also called shape poems.
What is a Blank Verse poem?
A poem with regular rhythm but no rhyme
What is a Ballad poem?
A narrative poem, usually fairly simple and fairly short, originally designed to be sung. They tell a story through dialogue and described action and make use of refrains
What is an Allegory poem?
A narrative that carries hidden references to actual events or people usually intended to teach a lesson
What is a Descriptive poem?
Describes a person, place or thing
What is a Didactic poem?
Any poem intended to teach a lesson
What is an Elegy poem?
A poem written in praise of the dead
What is a Free Verse poem?
A poem with totally free form, no rhyth, no rhyme
What is a Haiku?
A form of Japanese verse usually employing allusions and comparisons. It’s composed of three lines, containing a fixed number of syllables (5-7-5) to add up to 17 syllables in total
What is a Limerick?
A short, humorous poem, 4-5 lines, rhyme scheme AABBA
What is a Narrative?
Tells a story
What is an Ode?
A poem in praise of something
What is a Parody poem?
Imitates something serious in such a way as to poke fun at it
What is a Poetic Justice poem?
Perfect justice; good is rewarded, evil is punished
What is a Sonnet?
A poem of fourteen lines, usually in iambic pentameter, with definite rhyme schemes. It usually expresses a single, complex thought, idea or sentiment.
Ex. “Love, friendship, beauty”
What is a Tanka?
A type of Japanese poetry similar to Haiku. It consists of 31 syllables, arranged in 5 lines each with 7 syllables except the first and third which have 5 syllables. (5-7-5-7-7)
