- Positioned & installed to minimise risks
- Used safely,work planned by competent people

Lifting technique
- Lift in stages
- Hold object close
- Don’t obstruct
- Lower to knees first,feet apart & back straight
Reportable injuries under RIDDOR
- Fractures (not toes or fingers)
- Amputation
- Dislocation
- Loss of sight
- Burns to the eye
- Electric shock
- An injury requiring hospital for more than 24hrs
- Acute illness
Actions before entering a machinery space
- Inform person in charge
- Use man-below tally
- Select appropriate PPE
- Check COSHH data sheets
Confined space
An enclosed space which has been inventilated for more than 24hrs
* Fuel T
* F/W T
* Ballast T
* Machinery sumps
* Gear cases
* Heat Ex
* Watertight compartments
* STP’s
Before accessing a confined space
- Space is cool
- Force vented for 24hr min
- After 24hrs atmosphere tested safe
- If not safe,force vented for another 12hrs & retested. repeat till safe
- Gas free certificate obtained
PPE for confined space
- Overalls
- Boots
- Barrier cream/Gloves
- Paper coveralls
Precautions for confined spaces
- No smoking
- Sentry
- Have comms
- Have means to call for help
- Sentry has BA
- Lifeline
- Gas monitor
- Electrical equipment is tested spark free
