Narrator
The speaker of the story/movie. Their tone & mood dictates the atmosphere.
Mood
The feeling or emotion of the speaker, transferred into the story.
Motive
The reason(s) behind a character’s actions.
Theme
The main or central idea to a work.
Character Development
The physical, emotional, or mental change a character undergoes in a work.
Antagonist
The person who opposes the main character; antithesis.
Flashback
Any scene that shows a scene of action prior to the opening of a work.
Foreshadowing
A hint or suggestion of what is to come later in the work.
Characterization
The way a character acts thinks, feels. speaks, or looks to others.
Conflict
A struggle or difference between two opposing forces.
Setting
The place and time. When and where a story takes place.
Symbol
A person, place or object that represents itself and something else.
Point of View
The perspective. Told in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person.
Protagonist
The main character of the story. Probably the hero of the story.
Atmosphere
The entire state of mind given to the story. Tone and mood dictates it.
Tone
The atmosphere provided by the narrator’s voice and mood.
Irony
Literal Reality vs. Expected Occurrence
Omniscient
“all-knowing” or “all-seeing” perspective of the story.
Inference
A suggestion never stated but implied to the reader for effort.
Limited
The perspective seen from only one character.
