Short story genre conventions
Compressed structure, simple plot, short resolution, few characters, layered conflicts
Themes and ideas
Short stories typically offer observations about the world and its peoples.
Style
Understanding how combinations of language features create the style of a text
Representations
Understand how characters, conflicts etc act as representations of people, places, issues, etc
Narrator
Constructed through stylistic choices, and impact this has on reader and narrative distance
Response
Identify what the texts make you think and feel, and how they are shaped to encourage audiences to think and feel
Purpose
Identify and understand that stories are written for purposes - to engage, entertain, communicate themes/ideas. generate responses
Audience
Identify and understand that stories are wirtten for particular audences, identifiable through choices in subject matter, language, settings, values etc.
Memoir genre conventions
First person narrative pov, central subject, creative non-fiction, autobiographical, retrospective, strong personal voice, reflective tone, clear ptheme or learning, focused on narrator’s growth, believable
Purpose
Intended function of a text; the reason for which it was created.
Audience
Group of readers, listeners or viewers that the writer designer, filmmaker or speaker is adressing.
Context
The environment in which a text is responded to or created
Concept
Broad abstract ideas explored in texts such as loyalty, love, revenge, racism
Theme
An idea, concern or arguent developed in a text; a recurring element. (E.g. Subject of a text is love, and its theme could me how love involves sacrafice)
Ideas
Understandings, thoughts, notions, opinions, vews or beleifs [that are found in a text]
Issues
Matter of personal or public concern that are in dispute; things which directly or indirectly affect a person or members of a society and are considered to be problems
Values
Concepts or ideals we belive are important. (E.g. Compassion, accountability, respect, responsibilty)
Attitudes
Outlook or specific feeling about something. OUt values underlie our attitudes. (E.g. English is an important subject, Being a parent requires responsibility)
Perspective
A position from which things may be viewed or considered. People may have different perspectives on events or issues due to (for example) their age, gender, social position and beliefs and values.
Representations
The way people, events, issues or subjects are presented in a text. Not mirrors of the real world; they are consutrctions of reality.
Genre
Categories into which texts are grouped. Often used to distinguish texts on the basis of their subject matter. (Detective fiction, romance, science fiction)
