Round character
A highly developed character with many traits
Character
An individual who participates in the action of a literary work
Flat character
Exhibits few traits they are not well developed and we know very few about them
Dynamic character
Undergoes important changes throughout the story
Static character
Remains the same throughout the story
Direct characterization
The author directly tells you what that person is like
Indirect characterization
Find out about a character through their physical appearance, own thoughts, speech, and actions, and thoughts, speech, and actions of other characters
Conflict
Struggle between opposing characters
Internal conflict
appears within the character
External conflict
character is in conflict with an outside force, such as nature, physical obstacle, or another character
Plot
The sequence of events in a story.
Setting
Time and place of the action
Theme
Underlying message about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader. Generally not stated directly but must be inferred.
Allusion
Indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work.
Diction
Writers or speakers choice of words and way of arranging the words in sentences
Foreshadowing
Writers use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in a story.
Protagonist
Main character of a literary work who is involved in the central conflict
Antagonist
A principle character or force in opposition to the protagonist
Tone
The attitude the writer takes toward a subject.
Foil
Character who provides a striking contrast to another character
