What is ship money
Ship Money was a tax that was usually used to improve the navy
in times of war.
This was originally a tax paid by people living on the coast.
In 1634, Charles asked for ship money even though there was no war.
In 1635, he asked for everyone in England to pay, not just people living by the
coast.
Some people refused to pay because they felt it was the parliament that had the
right to raise new taxes. This made the king further unpopular.
SHORT TERM CAUSES OF
THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR
- Scottish crisis
- The Irish Rebellion
- Attempted Arrest of Five
Parliamentarians
What caused the scottish crisis
In 1638, Charles tried unsuccessfully to force Scottish Protestants to use the
English Prayer book and order of service.
The Scots refused and a riot broke out in St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.
In 1640, the Scots formed an army called the Covenanters and marched into
England.
what caused the Irish Rebellion
In September 1641, the arguments between Charles and
Parliament were interrupted by a Catholic rebellion in
Ireland.
An army was needed to put the rebellion down.
Traditionally the King always led the army into battle.
However, Parliament did not trust Charles I – they were
afraid that he might use the army against them!
What caused the Attempted Arrest of Five Parliamentarians
By trying to arrest the five MPs, Charles I broke the fundamental
law that MPs had freedom of speech. Charles I felt that he had no
option but to declare war on Parliament. He raised his battle
standard in Nottingham in August 1642 and began raising an
army.
The civil war had begun.
