What is the American Dream?
The American Dream is an ethos of the United States where freedom includes a promise of the possibility of prosperity and success.
What is James Truslow Adam’s definition of the American Dream in 1931?
That life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each person according to ability or achievement regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.
What is the American Dream rooted from?
It’s rooted from the Declaration of Independence which proclaims that “all men are created equal” and that they are “blessed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights”
What job suffered particularly badly during the great depression?
The 1930s are years of mass unemployment, particularly in agriculture with small farmers suffering badly and losing their land when they are unable to repay it back.
What is the cycle of depression?
As one company goes bust and its workers become unemployed, it causes other businesses that relied on that company to also go bust.
Why was so many people homeless?
If you lose your job, you often lose your home and the whole family ends up on the streets. Many such families end up living in cardboard shantytowns which become known as ‘Hoovervilles’.
How did the dustbowl region form?
Due to an increase in farming activity, erosion in the soil, paired with a 7 year drought starting in 1931 caused the once fertile grasslands to turn into the dustbowl region.
Where did lots of farmers go to find work?
California, it seemed like the promise land because the state’s mild climate allowed for a long growing season and a diversity of crops.
Due to the dustbowl forming, what happened to the farmers?
Many farmers were forced to leave their land with around 250,000-400,000 passing over the rocky mountains.
