What does abstract mean?
Concerned with ideas rather than tangible things: the opposite of concrete
What does allusion mean?
Unstraightforward or indirect reference to something
What does ambiguous + ambivalent mean?
(of a statement) having more than one possible meaning | (of a person) simultaneously having two things that are different attitudes to one thing
What does analogy mean?
A likeness in two things that are different in other ways
What does argument + argumentative mean?
The ideas or the fundamental view which a piece of writing sets out to prove | Writing which sets out to argue one point of view
What does end-stopped + enjambment mean?
The sentence stops at the end of the line | The sentence runs over from one line to the next
What does euphemism mean?
A mild or indirect term for something blunt or unpleasant, seeking to hide its real nature
What does idiom mean?
A form of expression peculiar to a particular language, which could not be translated literally
What does implicit mean?
Conveyed indirectly but not clearly stated
What does inversion mean?
Words arranged out of their normal structure so as to emphasis something
What does juxtaposition mean?
Placing words or events close together so that some association between them is suggested
What does naturalistic mean?
Writing which imitates ‘real’ life, without using non-naturalistic devices (dreams, flashbacks, etc.)
What does omniscient narrator mean?
A storyteller who knows everything about the inner thoughts of all the characters
What does oxymoron mean?
A contradictory or otherwise jarring phrase
What does paradox mean?
A seemingly absurd statement that nonetheless expresses the truth
What does parody mean?
An exaggerated limitation of another piece of writing, usually aimed at making fun of its model
What does pastoral mean?
Describing a world (sometimes imaginary) of simple, idyllic country life
What does pathetic fallacy mean?
The ascription of human emotions to inanimate nature, particularly to the weather. Often used to emphasise disastrous events
