What is Reader Response?
- each individual brings a different meaning to the text
- A reader’s response depends on personal experience, values, reading ability, and
mood.
What is Historical Criticism?
- make meaning from a text you must understand the author’s point of view.
- meaning of the text is what the author wanted it to be. This is much more objective and does not allow for personal interpretation.
What is Gender Criticism?
- focus on the authors, texts and readers, but particularly on women and 2SLGBTQIA+ readers’ responses to texts written by males.
Formal Criticism
- readers should concentrate on the text itself
- focus on identifying the meaning of the text’s words and structural components
Neo-Marxist Criticism
- find meaning through a deeper look at the power relationships set up in texts
Archetypal Criticism
- archetype is an image, narrative pattern, theme, character or other literary pattern which is present in all literature
- This includes a hero’s journey, circle of life, etc.
- Rooted in modern psychology
Deconstructive/ Post-Structuralist Criticism
- consider the author’s intention, the reader’s response, the time period in which the piece was written, the feminist and Marxist approaches and so fort
- you tear apart the text from all angles in order to understand its true meaning.

- reading literary folk tales will not change the tale, unlike the tradition of folk tales

What is Loss of Innocence?
- Coming of age
- an experience or period in a person’s life that leads to a greater awareness of evil, pain, and/or suffering in the world around them.
What is Damsels in Distress?
a person, usually a young woman, who needs to be rescued from danger or trouble of some kind
What is Brain over Braun?
emphasizes the value of intelligence, wit, and intellect over physical strength or brawn in its characters, themes, or narratives.
What is Child as Hero?
literature that features young protagonists who exhibit heroism and resilience in the face of challenges.
