Denoting- literal meaning
Connoting- associated meaning
What is phonology and what techniques are linked to it?
The sound of words- alliteration, assonance and repitition
What is vocabulary linked to grammar?
Sentence moods, types, parellism- repetition of same grammatical form
What is syntax?
How a sentence is formed- active voice/passive voice
What are aspects of graphology?
Layout elements like headings and fonts
What are pragmatics?
The who, what, why, when, how a text was produced. The reader’s situation and expectations
What is the Speech Act Theory and who developed it?
Austin- using language while also performing an action
What is the Speech Act Categorisation and who developed it?
Searle- the achieved meanings like assertive, declaratory, directive and expressive points
What is the Face Theory and who developed it?
Goffman- face is the concept of self image and how we present ourselves through language

Positive face- desire to be liked
Negative face- desire to protect personal rights
