Adjective
adds description to nouns. E.g the smell of sweet cherry blossoms
Adverb
adds description to verbs. E.g The cherry blossoms swayed gently in the breeze
Allusion
brief reference to historical, mythological, or literary significance. “Then they dropped the bomb” (Reference to the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945)
Alliteration
Alliteration is when two or more words that start with the same sound are used repeatedly in a phrase or a sentence. The repeated sound creates the alliteration, not the same letter. For example, ‘tasty tacos’ is considered an alliteration, but ‘thirty typist’ is not, because ‘th’ and ‘ty’ don’t sound the same.
Assonance
Assonance: this is when the same vowel sounds are repeated in multiple words. The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain.
Colloquialism
Informal language - everyday words with specific usage contexts. E.g bruh
Emotional Appeal
An emotional appeal, is a persuasive technique that tries to convince an audience by evoking strong feelings rather than using logical reasoning.
Enjambment
Enjambment is when a sentence in a poem runs over to the next line without a pause. Instead of ending with punctuation, it keeps flowing
Hyperbole
deliberate exaggeration for emphasis. E.g i’ve told you a million times
Imagery
vivid descriptions to create mental images. E.g somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue.
Juxtaposition
Placing 2 things side by side to highlight differences. E.g all’s fair in love and war
Metaphor
Directly referring to one thing by mentioning another. E.g It is the east, and juliet is the sun
Onomatopoeia
Words imitating sounds. E.g “Buzz”, “hiss”, “swish”
Oxymoron
statement contradicting itself. E.g heavy lightness, cold fire”
Personification
Giving human qualities to non-human entities. E.g love opening its arm not i wear sadness like a coat. very different
Rhetorical question
Questions with an obvious answer, used for effect
Simile
A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things using the words “like” or “as”. E.g They fenced us in like sheep.
Symbol
A symbol in literature is when something (like an object, person, or event) represents something else, often an idea or feeling, beyond its literal meaning.A dove might symbolize peace.
soliloquy
A soliloquy is a literary device used in drama where a character, usually alone on stage or believing themselves to be alone, speaks their inner thoughts and feelings aloud. E.g When juliet says o romeo, romeo wherefore art thou romeo? she is expressing her feelings about romeo, and her inner thoughts.
