Rhetorical Situation (and components)
Effective or persuasive speaking/writing.

– A set of methods whereby humans attempt to identify with each other
Audience and three types
The group of people the author is targeting/directing their writing towards!
– Primary, Secondary and Tertiary.
Narrative
Stories that are told for different purposes.
– Told from first person perspective and explores a key issue!
Gives a view into what the author is struggling with or working through!
Memoir
Writing focused on events, people and places that are important
– Capture the important moment and tell how it is important to them.
Descriptive
Dominant tone, personification, hyperbole, ask questions
– Focuses on types and placement of examples and evidence in writing to illustrate a point
Analysis
Detailed examination of the elements or structure of something.
Review
Informed judgments about the content and quality of a medium presented to the public.
Criticism
The comparison, analysis, interpretation and/or evaluation of works of literature.
Critical Reading/Thinking
Make judgments about how a text is argued

Breaks a work into parts and then explains how the parts work together to create a certain effect.

Be objective, assume nothing, tell story but not all of it
- Give readers some clues to movie’s merits before seeing
- Concise and to the point
- Leave out flowery details and absolutes!

Memoir Structure
Significance of the experience
- Explains how the event changed or impacted them or how they view life.
- Reflects on the importance of the memory of the event to the author today!
Narrative Structure
Engaging introduction, establish time and place, consistent point of view, consistent verb tense, sensory and descriptive detail, logical sequence, effective dialogue, thought provoking conclusion.
Linear
Presents events in the manner they occurred, tertiary audience, structure based, in order.
Non-Linear
Events out of sequence, focus on emotion, author focused
Descriptive
Time, place, tone and mood, tertiary/secondary audience, author paints pictures with language at very beginning
Historical
Shows sequence of events, cause and effect, all audiences, examine effects on the author, place.
Viewpoint
Filters events through the characters eye, secondary/tertiary audience
