‘If you can meet with triumph and disaster’
Personification. Learn to cope. Don’t get distracted.
IF- ‘if you can keep your head”
Emphasises that you should stay calm and composed all the time. Couplet ‘you’ and ‘you’ emphasises direct nature of poets message.
IF- ‘don’t deal in lies… don’t…’
Use of negative imperatives emphasises the actions which Kipling wants to implore his son not to be involved in.
IF- ‘twisted by knaves’
Metaphor. Emphasises that dishonest men could manipulate him and warns his son.
IF- ‘if you can force your heater and nerve to sinew’
Fight against fatigue and work hard to overcome it.
IF- ‘so hold on when there’s nothing left it in you’
Imperative. Work hard to over come weakness, have endurance.
IF- ‘if all men count on you, but none too much’
Don’t let people/kids rely on you too much.
IF- ‘yours is the earth and everything that’s in it’
Metaphor. You will achieve your highest potential.
