A

Satire is a form of critical commentary on aspects of contemporary society. It can be used to mock or bring attention to specific issues or people in the world.

Examples of satire include comic strips with ironic meanings and short stories with hidden meanings.

A

Situational Irony, Verbal Irony and Dramatic Irony

Situational Irony - The outcome of a situation is the opposite of what you would expect.

Verbal Irony - What someone says is the opposite of what they mean. (Intentional irony to mock and ridicule)

Dramatic Irony - When the audience knows something that the characters don’t (Intentional by the composer)

A

A story that can be read on more than one level.

In short, a story with a hidden meaning under it. In satire, it has a hidden meaning of questioning contemporary society and mocking it.

Verbal irony is saying the opposite of what is meant. Verbal irony is used to emphasise a point, express amusement or show anger or frustration.

A

Diminution is when you reduce or understate a real life situation , to make it seem ridiculous. For example, calling a fat man who weighs 100 kg, ‘Tiny’ is an example of diminution.

A

Farce is a technique where the use of highly exaggerated situations entertains the audience and thus excites laughter. The most common examples of farce are fighting, quarrelling, horseplay, slap-stick and drunkenness.

A

An essence of dark humour, where there is a tension between laughter and horror. (Mostly disgusting images that look stupid or funny at the same time)
