Enterobacteriaceae Flashcards
(20 cards)
Heat sable antigen located in the cell wall (LPS)
O antigen
Flagellar antigen; heat stable
H antigen
Capsular antigen; heat labile
K antigen
antigen of Salmonella typhi only
Vi antigen
Traveler’s diarrhea, contaminated food and drink, has heat labile toxin and heat stable toxin
Enterotoxigenic (ETEC)
infantile diarrhea in children less than a year, found in daycares, due to adhesions
Enteropathogenic (EPEC)
Rare in US, dysentery, watery diarrhea with scant stool, pus, mucus, and blood, do not ferment lactose
Enteroinvasive (EIEC)
hemorrhagic diarrhea, colitis, HUS, watery diarrhea progressing to bloody diarrhea without pus, can be fatal, produces verotoxin I and II
Shiga-toxigenic (STEC)
adheres to surface of small intestine, watery diarrhea lasting more than 2 weeks, commensals from colon
Enteroaggregative (EAEC)
Escherichia isolated from wounds
Escherichia hermanii, Escherichia vulneris
similar to K. pneumoniae but indole positive
K. oxytoca
formerly enterobacter agglomerans, similar to Klebsiella pneumoniae, plant pathogen, yellow
Pantoea agglomerans
meningitis and bacteremia in neonates from powdered infant formula, mucoid
Cronobacter sakazakii
proteus, indole negative, ornithine decarboxylase positive
P. mirabilis
proteus, indole positive, ornithine decarboxylase negative
P. vulgaris
Morganella, UTI infections, possible agent of diarrhea, similar to Proteus
M. morganii
Providencia, UTI, occasionally nosocomial outbreaks
P. rettgeri
Providencia, nosocomial burn unit outbreaks, also is in urine cultures, no swarming
P. sturatii
Edwardsiella, urea negative, lysine decarboxylase positive, H2S positive, indole positive, no growth on citrate
E. tarda
Only oxidase positive Enterobacteriaceae
Plesiomonas
