What was the role of peasants?
They were farmers. They were expected to do what they’re told and follow orders. They were important because they produced food. Many laws controlled them. They needed permission to travel and were forbidden to smoke tobacco or drink alcohol.
What was the role of artisans?
They usually live in towns or cities . Their children had to become artisans. They created high quality paper, and porcelain, and clocks and pans.
They were lower than peasants because they were not primary producers.

If everyone accepted their duties and obligations there would be peach and order.
Principles of Shintoism?
Nature is very important. Honor parents authority. Shintoism didn’t have many rules.
Why was the shogun threatened by Christian Missionaries?
Christians said no one was higher than God But the shogun wanted complete power.
What were the exclusion laws meant to do?
Laws created by Japan to stop learning from other cultures
Why did the shogun want to isolate Japan?
So Japan could stay the same and maintain social order

They were an island country that was difficult to access

Because constant water are was stopped they were able to keep money and save it on cultural things peace and prosperity

Trade agreements with Japan and the outside world
Why did the emperor become more important during the Meiji period?
The shogun was out of power so he became a symbolic leader

They wanted to show the west that they were just as modern
