Enviro Chapter 4 Study Cards Flashcards
(28 cards)
NPK
Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium
Nitrogen
UP -proteins and chlorophyll
-leaf and stem growth
Phosphorous
DOWN -root and flower growth
- cellular respiration and photosynthesis - seed germination
Potassium
ALL AROUND -early growth
- disease resistance - starch and protein production
Hydrolysis
reaction of a substance with water. water break down
Hydrolyze
break down by water
DDT
used to kill insects. during 1950s it was used to kill malaria and later recognized as having potentially harmful affects
Macronutrients
nutrients that organisms need in large amounts
Micronutrients
nutrients organisms need in small or trace amounts
pH scale
0-strong acids
7-neutral
14-strong bases
moving one place gets 10x stronger
Neutralization
any acid + any base = water and a salt
Run off
fertilizer into a pond
increase in temp
decrease in dissolved oxygen
increase or decrease in living things
Combustion
fuel + oxygen = carbon dioxide, water and energy
Nutrients in the body
helps with energy, growth, body building and cell repair
Organic
contains carbon atoms carbohydrates proteins lipids vitamins
Inorganic
does not contain a carbon atom
minerals
vitamins
elements
Roots
absorb water and minerals, with really fine root hairs
Acid Properties
-Acids taste sour
-Acids corrode metals
-Strong Acids are corrosive
-Turns the indicator blue
litmus paper to red
-Acids have a pH below 7
Base Properties
-Bases taste bitter
-Bases feel slippery
-Strong Bases are corrosive
-Bases turn the indicator red
litmus paper blue
-Bases have a pH above 7
Neutral Properties
-Are not acidic or basic
-Do not change the
color of litmus paper
-Have a pH of 7
Nitrogen Cycle
INSIDE
-animal/plant waste
-decomposers break down waste and release nitrogen into the soil
-uptake of nitrogen by plants
-consumers eat plants containing nitrogen ^
OUTSIDE OF CYCLE
free nitrogen in the air
bacterias in roots convert free nitrogen to compounds
bacteria release some free nitrogen back into air ^
Nitrogen Fixation
procces of changing free nitrogen so the other atoms can combine with other elements to form compounds that organisms can use
Anemones
capture food with tentacles
Lichens
in cold dry areas and are made of fungi and algae
