Enviromental Change And Management Flashcards
(42 cards)
What is the definition of ‘sustainability’?
A way to maintain something in a neutral balance so it doesn’t increase or decrease but stays the same.
What is the definition of ‘Environment’?
A particular place and it surroundings which animals, plant and humans live in.
What is the definition of ‘geography’?
The study of features of the Earth, atmosphere, and human activity and the way human activity contributes and effects change on Earth
What is the definition of ‘carbon cycle’?
The series of processes by which carbon compounds are interconverted in the environment, involving the incorporation of carbon dioxide into living tissue by photosynthesis and its return to the atmosphere through respiration, the decay of dead organisms, and the burning of fossil fuels.
What is the definition of ‘global warming’?
The gradual increase in the concentration of green house gasses (carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere which leads to a overall increase in temperature of the earth’s atmosphere.
What is the definition of ‘sink function’?
The safe absorption of the waste and pollution produced by human activities and other life.
What is the definition of ‘source function’?
Natural resources which have originated directly from the biophysical environment .
What is the definition of ‘service function’?
The provision of the environmental or ecosystems services that support life without requiring human action.
What is the definition of ‘spiritual function’?
Earths intrinsic recreational, psychological, aesthetic and spiritual value of environments.
What is the definition of ‘ecological services’?
‘what nature provides for humanity’. A biological and physical process that occurs in natural or semi-natural ecosystems and maintain the habitability and livelihood of people on the planet.
What is the definition of ‘stewardship’?
Caring for the land and it’s ecological services.
What is the definition of ‘biocapcity’?
Regenerative capacities of biomes and ecosystems.
What is ten definition of ‘climate change’?
The yearly changes in the earths atmosphere, which is highly variable over earths surface which human activity is increasing the rate of global warming leading to more dramatic climate change.
What is the detention of ‘enhanced greenhouse effect’?
Human activity (burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil) have led to what is known as enhanced greenhouse effect which is heating Earth and it’s atmosphere.
What is the definition of ‘space’?
the dimensions of height, depth, and width within which all things exist and move.
What is the definition of ‘place’?
A particular position, point, or area in space; a location.
What is the definition of ‘interconnected’?
To be or become connected or interrelated.
What is the definition of ‘change’?
An act or process through which something becomes different.
What is the definition of ‘scale’?
The relative size or extent of something.
What is the definition of ‘carbon cycle’?
