environment stuff #1 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is an “Environmental Worldview”
collective beliefs about the relationship between humans and the environment
2 types of environmental worldviews
~ Ecocentric
– Believes nature has its own value & humans should live in harmony with the environment
~ Anthropocentric
– Believes humans are the most important and nature should be used to benefit people.
How can deforestation impact ecosystems?
through:
- soil degradation
- loss of habitat for species (eg. chimpanzees)
- contributes to climate change
Which is an environmental change:
deforestation or earthquakes?
~ Earthquakes
- they are natural environmental events caused by movement of tectonic plates
Name one environmental change caused by human activity?
~ Climate change
- main cause is the increase of greenhouse gas emissions from burning of fossil fuels into atmosphere
How does rising sea levels affect coastlines? example?
- increases coastal erosion
- threatens coastal ecosystems
- contributes to coastal flooding
Explain how reduced access to freshwater impacts communities?
Causes:
- economic hardship
- environmental damage
- health problems
Describe how extreme weather events damage coastal environments?
Causes:
- coastal erosion
- damage to ecosystems & infrastructure
Define “invasive species”
~ organisms that are introduced to an area outside of their natural range
Causes:
- ecological + economic harm
Name 2 invasive species to Australia & describe impact
~ Cane toad
- introduced in 1930s to control cane beetles in sugar fields.
now they pose threat to native species through competition for resources and toxicity.
~ Red fox
- introduced in 1860s for recreational hunting.
threat to native species.
Why is education important in improving human wellbeing?
Provides knowledge and skills - creates opportunities necessary for a healthy fulfilling life
