environmental cycle Flashcards
(13 cards)
the water cycle
the cycling of water through the lithosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.
transpiration
the water is released in the atmosphere through the stomata.
condensation
cooling of the vapor (gas) in atmosphere creating water droplets.
precipitation
water drops formed by condensation fall to earth from the atmosphere
surface run-off
refers to the movement of water over the land surface
infiltration
precipitation that falls onto land, can soak into the soil refilling ground water sources
ground water flow
water that infiltrates into the soil becomes ground water, which slowly moves through underground aquifers
aquifers
an underground layer of water-bearing material, like permeable rock or unconsolidated materials, that can store and transmit groundwater
evaporation
the sun heats bodies of water such as ocean, lakes and rivers, that causes the water to become water vapor (gas) and go into the sky.
freezing
converts the water from its liquid state into its solid state.
melting
converts snow .r ice into liquid water,
sublimation
transforms a solid straight into a gas (skips liquid state)
