environmental systems/system analysis Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the most important materials in environment systems?
Water, oil, coal, chemicals, and gases.
What are opened and closed systems?
- the exchange of matter of energy or matter is possible between open systems.
- in closed systems, exchange between different systems does not occur.
What is an example of an open and closed system?
- the ocean and the earth
What is a system analysis?
To determine what happens in a given system
What vocabulary describes the components of a system?
Pool is the balance of matter and energy in a system before any change. Input is matter or energy acquired by a system. Output is the matter or energy outputted by the system.
How to calculate the mass balance analysis / flux
Inputs - outputs
How to find out if a system is in a steady state?
If the input and outputs are the same, and if the size of the pool does not change.
What is a feedback in terms of a system?
Something a system does in response to events
What are negative and positive feedback loops?
- negative feedback loop: an interacting series of events bringing the system variable back to its original level.
- positive feedback: a series of events where the system variable moves away from the set point.
What is the set point?
The stable point of the parameter you are looking at
What is the overshoot
When the stable set point is exceeded
- the wait time between when signals are responded to
