Enzymes Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the experiment to test for the conditions needed for amylase to digest starch

A

Add drop of iodine in a spotting tile
Add starch and amylase to a boiling tube
Remove a drop of the mixture every 10 seconds and add it to iodine on dropping tile.
At the point the amylase has fully digested the starch no colour change will be observed, note the time at which this occurs, repeat for other values of independent variable

Q

Effect of temperature on enzymes

A

As temp increases, reaction increases, until enzymes denature, then it decreases

Q

Effect of pH

A

Different enzymes work best at different pH
If too high of or low bonds in amino acid of protein can break changing the active site, so substrate can no longer fit.
Optimum pH
