Enzymes Flashcards
(21 cards)
Enzymes work at different what, expect for temperature ?
PH
What is the optimum temperature for Enzymes in the human body ?
37 (c)
What do digestive enzymes do ?
They catalyse the breakdown of big molecules into small molecules
Where is the enzyme amylase produced ?
Salivary gland, pancreas, small intestine
What does the enzyme amylase breakdown and where ?
Maltose and starch to glucose. They catalyse breakdown in the mouth and small intestine
Where is the protein protease produced ?
Small intestine, pancreas , the stomach
What does the enzyme protease breakdown and where ?
Protein into amino acids. They catalyse breakdown in the mouth and small intestine
Where is the enzyme lipase produced ?
Small intestine and pancreas
What does the enzyme lipase breakdown and where ?
Lipids (fats and oils) into fatty acids and glycerol. They catalyse breakdown in the small intestine.
What acid does the stomach produce and why ?
Hydrochloric acid (HCL), as enzymes in stomach work best at acidic PH.
What does the liver produce and where is the product stored ?
The liver produces bile, which is stored in the gall bladder.
What is the bile needed for ?
This is needed to neutralise acidic conditions (because of HCL) in small intestine for other enzymes to work.
What enzymes do some microorganisms produce and how are they used ?
Enzymes which can pass out of cells. They can be used in the home and industries.
What type of enzymes are used in the home?
Biological Detergents and washing powder
What Ingredient is the enzyme in biological detergents ?
The biological ingredient
What enzymes are used in biological detergents and why are they affective?
Protein- digesting enzymes and Fat-digesting enzymes. They work at low temperatures compared to other detergents.
Why is protease used in baby food?
This is to pre digest the food
What is the protein carbohydrases used for ?
To convert starch into sugar syrup
The enzyme isomearse is used to do what and why is it useful ?
This is used to convert glucose to fructose syrup which is sweeter and therefore smaller quantities are used
Why do enzymes benefit industries ?
They catalyse reactions making them faster at low temperature and low pressure
What happens to enzymes at high temperatures
They denature at high temperatures (45c)
