What are the two kinds of evil?
- anything that invokes misfortune & causes suffering
- negative manifestations which proceed from human will and a violation of god
What are the causes of the majority of suffering?
introducing cruel mutual warfare, chasing egotistical physical wellbeing, evil in the heart of man and demonic attitude of pride, revenge, and sin
What is the essence of moral evil?
not some essence that has independent existence, but a deviation from God’s creation of humankind, God did not cause moral evil
What is the essence of evil?
proceeds from human deviation of the will of God, violation of God’s will that is called sin
What is the origin of evil?
evil entered the world as a consequence of the fall

What does diaballein mean?
to slander, to set at a variance
What does diabolos mean?
slanderer, the devil
What are the consequences of the angel’s fall?
cast down from the world above
What are some misfortunes in the physical world?
earthquakes, storms, floods, landslides, fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.
What are the three gifts from God to humanity?
freedom, reason, love
What temptations come from the gifts of God?
temptation of wavering in one’s choice, growing proud in the mind/ego, loving oneself instead of God
Who/what is the serpent?
it is a tempter or the devil
What are some characteristics of the serpent?
sneaky, cunning, poisonous
What were the sins of eating the forbidden fruit?
violated the direct commandment from God, did not show obedience, trust, or humility in God,
What were the moral consequences of the fall?
impossible to return to the previous sanctity and righteousness, reveals abandonment to God, ashamed of nakedness
What were Adam’s actions/replies to God?
wanted to hide from God saying it was because of his nakedness, tried to blame it on Eve and justify himself
What were the moral consequences of the fall pt. 2?
the principle of sin entered immediately into man, became in the nature of man, man became a servant of sin, moral inclinations are towards evil not good
How do lust and pride relate to man’s impulses?
lust of flesh is a weakening of authority to the spirit of the body, lust of eyes is false idols and attachments or greed and hunger for earthly things, pride of life is egoism or selfishness
What were the physical consequences of the fall?
diseases, hard labor, death, loss of paradise
What is the original/ancestral sin?
eating the forbidden fruit and disobeying God
What are the two tendencies in western theology about the original/ancestral sin?
Roman Catholic: the GUILT before God of Adam and Eve has passed onto all humanity
Protestant: brought the complete depravation of human nature and its corruption to all of humanity
What is the Eastern Orthodox view?
humanity has received death and corruption through Adam, but not share his guilt, humans have inherited a tendency towards sin, a spiritual goal called theosis (to become divine/godly person)
