Epidemiology and Control Terminology Flashcards
(11 cards)
1
Q
Epidemic (Pattern of Infection)
A
- Unusually high number of infected individuals in a population at one time.
- Can range from the small scale up to nationwide
- e.g. Ebola in West Africa
2
Q
Pandemic (Pattern of Infection)
A
- a world-wide epidemic
* e.g. HIV or influenza
3
Q
Endemic (Pattern of Infection)
A
- Constantly present, usually affecting a small proportion of the population
- e.g. MRSA is endemic to many hospitals
4
Q
Sporadic (Pattern of Infection)
A
- Individual cases in geographically separate areas
* Incidents are not related
5
Q
Outbreak (Pattern of Infection)
A
- A number of cases in a short period of time in the same area
- Assumed to be related
6
Q
Carrier
A
• Infected individual showing no obvious sign of disease
7
Q
Acute carrier
A
- Before symptoms appear
* Carrier state of short duration
8
Q
Chronic carrier
A
- Long term
- May have recovered from the disease but still harbour pathogens
- May be asymptomatic
- E.g. Hepatitis, TB, typhoid fever
9
Q
Immunisation
A
• Using vaccines or antibody preparations to provide immune protection against infectious diseases
10
Q
Passive (antibody preparation)
A
- Preformed antibodies created in another host
- Protect individual exposed to disease
- Work immediately but short-term protection
11
Q
Active (vaccines)
A
- Modified / purified pathogens or their product
- Stimulate host to produce own specific immunity
- A few weeks lag before protection, but long-lasting
