Episode Intention Flashcards
(9 cards)
To business (1)
The young woman doesn’t fit into the mechanical, duty-driven nature of society and immediately appears different to the other characters. There is a sense of suffocation and oppression in the world which the young woman cannot bear.
At home (2)
The young woman feels oppressed by what is expected of women in the era (maritial duties). Her mother is part of the machine of society, revolving around money and marriage, highlighting how the YW is different. She feels trapped and yearns for freedom.
Honeymoon (3)
The young woman is desperate to escape the patriarchal society she is trapped within. She feels suffocated by the husband and feels pressured to stay in a marriage that really she cannot stand.
Maternal (4)
This episode highlights how the young woman is isolated and is drowning in expectations. She is oppressed by decisions made for her and feels stifled. Other characters merely belittle her, which only adds to her suffocation.
Prohibited (5)
Only in an illegal drinking den can freedom truly be found. However, my aim would be to show that, even in this setting, societal control still dominates. Homosexuality and abortion are being discussed, reflecting power battles and the expectations placed upon people. Although the YW demonstrates a change in confidence, ultimately she is still being controlled and manipulated by the ‘stronger’ sex.
Intimate (6)
There is an emergence of confidence in the young woman, in that she feels as though she can defy society’s control. She has found a sense of freedom, contrasting to the meek character in the beginning of the play. This is the ONLY episode which doesn’t communicate a ‘machine-like’ feel.
Domestic (7)
The young woman returns to her reality, in which she is trapped in a marriage which is robotic and monotonous. She desperately wants to escape the constraints of female duty, and although her anxiety would still be present, there would also be the sense of feeling ready to take a stand against her life.
The Law (8)
By the end of the episode, the young woman realises that societal control will always dominate - she completely loses hope. The episode highlights society’s view of women and reminds the audience of male domination. But it also explores her identity - it uses her full name and, by the end, suggests that although she will be locked up, mentally she will be free.
A machine (9)
The prison would communicate a machine which the young woman is finally being forced to enter. All the stages of her life are complete and she is in the grip of control. She would be fearful, but also show a sense of readiness, in which she has prepared herself for her fate.
