Q

What is a basement membrane?

A
  • It is made of protein fibres in a protein-carbohydrate matrix
  • It anchors epithelium to the connective tissue below

Q

Give four features of squamous epithelium.

A
  1. Thin flattened cells
  2. Cells can be less than 0.2 micrometers thick
  3. Apical surfaces faces lumen
  4. Found in the alveoli and capillaries

Q

Give four features of columnar epithelium.

A
  1. Epithelial cells extend out of the basement membrane
  2. Apical surface facing lumen of intestine is covered in micro-villi
  3. Micro-villi increase the surface area available for absorption
  4. Found in the small intestine

Q

Give three features of ciliated epithelium.

A
  1. Cilia is found on the apical surface of epithelium
  2. It is pseudostratified
  3. Found in the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles

Q

What is meant by the term ‘pseudostratified’?

A
