Skinner
Operant Conditioning
Pavlov
Classical conditioning, tone + meat powder
Watson
Classical conditioning, Little Albert, white rat + loud noise, stimulus generalization
Thorndike
Operant conditioning, Law of Effect, idea that if you do things and followed by pleasurable consequences, you do them more
Classical conditioning
Pairing, two things are paired
Operant conditioning
Reinforcement
Unconditioned stimulus
Everyone responds same way without pairing, learning, training
Conditioned stimulus
Something that’s been paired, not everyone responds that way
Unconditioned response
Response to unconditioned stimulus
Conditioned response
Response to conditioned stimulus (usually same response as unconditioned, but is from pairing not universal)
Standard conditioning
Neutral or US unconditioned stimulus (bell) comes first, then CS conditoned stimulus (meat powder)
Backward conditioning
Give CS first then US, will never learn
Stimulus generalization
Associated with classical but happens in operant too, generalize from CS to similar CS or neutral without there being pairing
Response generalization
Only operant conditioning, when do similar behavior to one that that you learned through reinforcment (.e.g train bird to peck wall, they peck ceiling)
Classical extinction
Stop pairing, present CS without US (tone wiht no meat powder)
Operant extinction
Stop reinforcing
Habituation
Classical conditioning, habituating to the unconditioned stimulus (we cant always habitue to all US) e.g. if you live in noisy neighborhood, you habituate and no longer startle
Satiation
Operant conditioning, too many rewards and we get full - e.g. moved in with your partner, get sick of beign together
Positive reinforcement
Reward
Positive punishment
Pain
Negative reinforcement
Relief
Negative punishment
Loss
How to determine if negative/positive and reinforcement/punishment
1) What is target behavior? 2) Is something being added (positive) or taken away (negative)? 3) Will this behavior stop (punishment) or continue or increase (reinforcement)?
What reinforcement schedule do people respond most to?
Variable ratio
