EQ2 Flashcards
(15 cards)
How is a spit formed?
By longshore drift moving sediment along a coast until it reaches a headland and grows out towards sea
How is a bar formed?
Sediment that gets dragged along by longshore drift on 2 headlands of a bay until they meet each other forming a bar. The water blocked off is called a lagoon
Concordant coastline
Parallel to coast, unusual, coves, can be featureless e.g. Dorset. Usually just coastal erosion
Discordant coastline
Rock layers perpendicular to coast
Headlands and bays
E,g. Bantry bay
Arch stack and stumps are found here. Landforms
What’s a cove?
Form on concordante coast when erosion creates gaps through thin layers of resistant rock. Exposes less resistant rock that can erode easily into a cove shape
Hydraulic action
Compression and force of water and air being forced into crack
Abrasion
When rocks are picked up by waves and smash into cliff
Solution
When sea becomes acidic caused by vegetation near cliff. Dissolves rock such as limestone
Attrition
Rocks that are held in waves, smash into each other. Gradually rocks become smaller and smoother
Constructive waves
Long wave, low her height, common in summer, low wave frequency, stronger swash, surging waves forward, adds sediment to beach
Destructive waves
Short wave length, high wave height, common in winter, high wave frequency, stronger backwash, plunging waves downwards, removes sediment from beach
Solution transport
Within water, dissolved, very small, chalk
Suspension
Within water, carried, small
Traction
Seabed, rolling, large
Saltation
Seabed, hopping, large
