Equations Flashcards
(27 cards)
work out a + 4 = 9
a = 5
solve 5y = 20
5y divided by 5 = 20 divided by 5
Y = 4
Remember to perform the ……. operation to ……… sides
Same , both
With more complex equations your aim is to get ………. on one side and numbers on another
unknowns
Ps.this is just so u no how to do the next few Qs
Solve 3x + 2 = 8
-2 from both sides =
3x = 6
Divide 3 to both sides =
X = 2
If the term in x is negative it’s the same ~ your aim is to get all x’s on one side
To know how to do the next few Qs
Work out 5x - 2 = 12 - 2x
\+ 2x to each side = 7x - 2 = 12 \+ 2 to each side = 7x = 14 Divided by 7 = X = 2
To expand a bracket, multiply everything ……… by the ………….. number
inside , outside
Solve 2(3a + 5)
(2 x 3a) + (2 x 5) =
6a + 10
1/2 x is the same as…
x/2
1/4x is the same as…
x/4 - x is numerator and the original denominator stays the same ( 3/5 = x/5)
Equations with fractions are solved by doing the ….. thing to both sides of the equation
Same
Solve 1/2x = 3 (or x/2 = 3)
multiply both sides by 2 =
x = 6
Fraction on both sides is worked out by multiplying both sides by the LCM of the denominator
To understand next Qs
Work out. X-3/2 = x-2/3
x-3 over 2 = x-2 over 3
LCM = 6 so times both sides by 6 3(x-3) = 2(x-2)** Expand = 3x - 9 = 2x - 4 -2x = x - 9 = -4 \+9 = x = 5 **to get to this you should look at the fractions denominator and see how many of that number go into the LCM
