Equilibrium Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is Henry’s law
The mass of a gas dissolved in a solvent in proportional to the pressure if the gas above the solvent.
Charactersitics of equilibria
- Closed system
- Dynamic in nature
- measurable properties become contsnat
- expression for C which is contant at constant temp
- magnitude of constentration expression gives the indication of the extent of the reaciton
Desrcube the state of quiliburbrum
The state where the measurable properties of a system such as concentration does not undergo any further change
Law of mass action
The rate os a reaction is proportional to the product of contentrations raised to their stoichometric coefficients
Law of chemical equilibrium
at given temp, ratio of forward and backward rate is constant
Types of equilibrium
- Homogenous equilibrium - same state
- hetorgenous equilibrium - different states
What happens when Q and K differ
- Q>K : backward
- Q<K : forward
Le chatelier’s principle
If a system in equilibrium is subjected a stress, the equilibrium will shift such as to undo the effect of the stress
