Equilibrium Flashcards
(10 cards)
Chemical equilibrium
When a reaction and its reverse proceed at the same rate
Amount of reactants and products at equilibrium
Constant
Homogenous equilibria
Occur when all reactants and product are in the same phase
Heterogenous equilibria
Occur when something in equilibrium is in a different phase
Value for concentration of a pure substance
Always 1
La chatelier’s principle
If a system at equilibrium is disturbed by a change in temperature, pressure, or a components concentration, the system will shift its equilibrium position to counteract it
Reaction quotient (Q)
Tells us the direction of a reaction and if its at equilibrium
If a system is in equilibrium what would adding a reactant do
The reactants will be used up
If a system is in equilibrium what would removing a reactant do
Removing a reactant will result in some being produced
How do catalysts help a system reach equilibrium
Decreasing activation energy allowing equilibrium to be established at lower temperatures
