Equine diseases Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is Sarcocystis neurona?
It is a protozoa that causes EPM (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis)
What is EMS (equine metabolic syndrome)
A disorder where horses have insulin dysregulation making it harder for a horse to loose weight.
What bacteria causes Lyme disease?
Borrelia Burgdorferi
What is aerophagia ?
Windsucking
What is the common term for laryngeal hemiplegia?
Roaring
A horse gets Anthrax if it ingests _______ spores
Bacillus anthracis
How often do horses need to get their core vaccines?
Once a year
Vaccines are typically injected how
Through intramuscular injections (IM) typically in the neck or pectoral muscles
At what months in a mares pregnancy should she be given EHV-1 vaccine
3, 5, 7 and 9 months
What are the main differences between EHV-1 and EHV-4
EHV-1 typically causes abortion, neurological diseases and respiratory issues
EHV-4 typically just causes respiratory issues
What age group of horses does strangles usually effect?
1 through 5 year olds
How long does a horse have EIA for?
For life (some states require positive coggins tested horses to be euthanized)
EIA is also known as
Swamp fever
What causes EPM
(equine protozoal myeloencephalitis)
Sarcocystis neurona
What is the definitive host for sarcocystis neurona?
Opossums
What’s another name for urticaria?
Hives
What are the types of colic
Gas
Spasmodic
Impaction
Displacement
Torsion
Sand
What is Gas colic?
Occurs where there is an excess buildup of gas within the large intestine. Horses may look bloated.
What is Spasmodic colic
One of the most common types of colic, and as a result of intestinal cramps or spasms
What is impaction colic?
Occurs when partially digested food buildup in the intestines resulting in blockage or impaction
What is displacement colic?
Occurs when an area of the intestine moves from its normal location in the abdominal cavity to somewhere else
What is torsion colic?
A twisted gut colic occurs when a portion of the intestine twists on itself
What is strangulation colic
Occurs when the blood supply to an area of the intestines is cut off, resulting in rapid death of the intestinal wall
What is sand colic?
Happens to horses that live in Sandy areas or horses that are fed on sand ground the sand particles buildup in the intestines resulting in colic
