1
Q

What is erosion?

A

The erosion definition is the degredation of a surface due to an external condition such as wind or water flow.

Q

What is hydraulic action?

process of erosion

A

The force of the river water colliding with rocks breaks rock particles away from the river channel.

Rubed against the channel

Q

What is abrasion?

process of erosion

A

Eroded rocks picked up by the river scrape and rub against the channel, wearing it away.
Most erosion happens by abrasion

Q

What is attrition?

process of transportaion

A

Eroded rocks picked up by the river crash into each other and break into smaller fragments. Their edges also get rounded off as they rub togather.

The further material travels, the more it is eroded - attrition causes particle size to decrease from a rivers source to mouth

Q

What is solution?

process of erosion

Transportation

A

River water dissolves some types of rock (limestone, chalk) in water and carried along

Suspention

process of transportaion

A

small particles like slit or clay are carried along by the river flow

Q

Saltation

process of transportation

A

Pebble-sized particles are bounced along the river bed by the force of the water

Q

Traction

process of transportation

A

Large particles or rocks like boulders are pushed along the river bed by the force of the water.

Q

What is deposition?

A

When a river drops the material it’s transporting
It occurs when a river loses velocity and energy

Q

Why do rivers slow down?

A

The volume of water fall
The amount of eroded material increases
The water is shallower
The river reaches it’s mouth
