Erosional Landforms Flashcards
(24 cards)
What side of mountains does the sun shine on in winter?
The southface therefore, the northface will be colder.
Where does the wind blow from in the UK?
SOUTHWEST
blows away snow to the NORTHEAST
What happens to the snow which accumulates on the (NE) side of the mountain?
It collects in a hollow on the mountain and it is compressed into ice
How does the compressed ice in the hollow turn into a corrie?
2) Over time the ice slips: plucking +abraision on the rock makes the hollow bigger. As it slips, it rotatesβ> it rotates ROTATIONAL SLIP
3) after glaciation when the ice has melted, you are left with a corrie with a STEEP BACK WALL(plucking) AND CORRIE LIP.
True or false? TWO CORRIES CAN FORM NEXT TO EACH OTHER
RICHTIG JA JA πππππ€π€
What is the top of 3 corries called?
Pyramidal peak
Arete
Knife edge ridge with steep sides
It is left behind when 2 glaciers next to each other have worn away the valley sides leaving behind the ridge.
U shaped valley
Glacial trough
Truncated spur
In a v-shaped valley, a SPUR juts out into the river. When a glacier cuts through a v-shaped valley it truncates (cuts off the end of the spurs) leaving behind the triangle shaped face of rock
Hanging valley
A smaller valley hanging above the main valley. Formed by a smaller glacier.
Ribbon Lake
Long thin βRibbonβ shaped lake in the bottom of a U-shaped valley
What kind of rock is produced by FREEZE THAW WEATHERING?
Angular + Sharp + Variety of sizes
What is the deposited rocks at the snout of a glacier called?
Terminal moraine
What are the deposited rocks at the sides of a glacier called?
Lateral moraine
What is the rocks deposited in the middle of two glaciers called?
Medial moraine
What is the name given the the partvif the glacier from the snout outwards?
Outwash plain (infront of glacier)
Where rocks are more rounded and are transported by water
What are moraines made up of?
Till
What is till?
Broken rock deposited by glaciers- can be shaped into moraines
Explain how a terminal moraine is formed.
The glacier pushes sediment in front of it like a bulldozer. β> ridge at furthest point
What is a drumlin?
Egg shaped hills which form under the glacier
Round at one end are tapered at the other
What are a swarm of drumlins called?
Basket of eggs
How are drumlins formed?
Generally accepted that they are formed as a result of the glacier advancing then retreating
What are erratics?
Rocks and boulders picked up by the ice and transported far from where they originated.
What can we use erratics to work out?
How far glaciers went and which direction they went in.
