-NV would be ruled by HCM and SV would be ruled by Ngo Dinh Diem. This was supposed to be temporary as new elections would be held across the whole country
-Vietnam would be divided amongst the 17th parallel which was a DMZ at this point.

How was Diems rule in SV controversial?

A

-He was a catholic in a largely Buddhist country and his regime persecuted Buddhists. Monks protested this including one setting himself on fire.
-Diem forced peasants off their lands so he could give it to his friends in powerful families
-He imprisoned people who opposed him

How did the USA increase support to Diem under President JFK?

A

-Number of military advisors increased to 16,000
-Financial aid increased so the ARVN could grow by an extra 20K troops
-300 helicopters sent to transport ARVN. They were instructed not to fire but this was hard when the VC fired on them
-Supported Diem’s strategic Hamlet programme. This moved peasants from villages in VC controlled areas to new heavily fortified villages designed to prevent contact between peasants and VC

A

-Often converted peasants into VC sympathisers
-They resented going unpaid to build fortifications against an enemy that didn’t threaten them
-They were angered by corrupt officials who pocketed money meant for growing crops and the public sector.

Why was guerrilla warfare difficult for the allies?
-The VC did not wear uniform, they dressed like civilians. -They had no known base or headquarters and worked in small groups. -They disappeared into the jungle, villages and tunnels

How was Guerrilla warfare so effective?
-Booby traps could improvise and were very effective, 11% of American casualties were from booby traps -They ambushed US troops- 51% of US casualties were from ambushing and the ensuing 'firefights'. -The VC and NVA got close to their opponents so the Americans could not drop bombs in fear of hitting their own men. This was known as "hanging on to American belts".

-Only slowed the VC down, not defeat them. -The communists shot down 14K US and SV aircraft. -It cost the US $400,000 to kill one VC fighter. This equated to 75 bombs and 400 artillery shells.

What were cluster bombs and what was their aim?
-A mother bomb exploded mid air into 600 smaller ones. -The aim was to injure VC soldiers so it could use up their manpower to remove injured soldiers from the battlefield that needed to be treated.

What was 'Agent Orange' and how effective was it?
-A toxic weed killer which would destroy the jungle -Wiped out 4 million acres of forest and affected 1.3 million people

-Troops would be dropped from a helicopter to target areas -The troops would search for any signs the village contained VC fighters. -If it was the case, the VC would destroy the village.

-Innocent villages mistaken for those of VC -Innocent peasants killed -Peasants resented this and sided with VC

-Low morale due to VC tactics led to atrocities -US tactics based on killing as many VC as possible.

-In January 1968, VC and NVA attacked 100+ cities and military targets -The US embassy was nearly taken over in Saigon -VC seized many radio stations for several hours

-They thought the SV people would rise up with them. They did not. -The VC lost 10K fighters -NVA lost 50K men

-Questions were raised about the nature of the war -500K troops and $20 billion spent on war so how were they took by surprise? -Many civilians killed in taking back of towns and cities -LBJ lost Cronkite "What the hell is going on? -In 1968, American troops massacred 400 Vietnamese peasants in My Lai.
