eSchool Unit 1 Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is a Developed Country?
A highly industrialized country where higher wealth is common. Resource usage is also high
What is a Developing Country?
A less industrialized country where poverty/poor people are more common and the average income is lower. Resource consumption tends to be lower.
Define a Hypothesis.
a test explanation for an observation
What are natural resources?
a substance found on or in our planet that living organisms use to survive. Air, sunlight, food, water, etc.
What is the human population crisis?
When human populations grow too quickly for the area resources to support them and thus tend to deplete resources.
What is a renewable resource?
Resources needed by living organisms that are continually replenished.
Explain the Scientific Method
a set approach to solving problems with science by observing and collecting information, forming hypotheses, testing them with experiments, and drawing conclusions about the initial observation.
Sustainability definition
Using our natural resources in a way that they do not deplete or run out. In other words, making sure there are resources left for future generations.
What is the IPAT model?
It is a model that associates general factors that have an effect or impact on Earth’s resources. The equation reads, “Impact = Population x Affluence x Technology.”
This term from the IPAT model connects wealth with increased consumption of resources.
Affluence.
Who was Garret Hardin?
He wrote the infamous article entitled, “The Tragedy of the Commons”
Who was Elinor Ostrom
She wrote many articles on “Managing the Commons” and directly challenged Hardin’s previous notion that humans could not sustain resources.
Explain Hardin’s meaning behind his article, The Tragedy of the Commons?
Hardin felt that someone would always negate the benefit of the group and consume resources for oneself.
The first step in the process of the scientific method?
