ESE 370 Week 3 Discussion 2 Optimal Environment NEW
Optimal Environment [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7]. 1st Post Due by Day 3.
To create an optimal environment for learning, we must consider more than just the furniture.
Our brain is influenced by aromas in the room, music playing, and even the number of plants that populate the space. Describe a time from your own learning experience that was influenced in either a negative or positive way by the physical learning environment. Using examples from the course materials, describe your optimal environment for learning. Be sure to explain why you would include or exclude particular elements. In addition to the Willis and Mitchell (2014) textbook, Chapter 5 of the Given text and Chapter 6 of the Jensen text may also be useful.
Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts and compare their learning experiences to your own. Suggest how you may have responded in their situation. Provide additional recommendations for creating the optimal environment for learning. Let them know how you would be influenced by what they have included in their optimal environment.

ESE 370 Week 3 Discussion 1 Sensory Contributions to Learning NEW
Sensory Contributions to Learning [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 & 9]. 1st Post Due by Day 3.
The main types of developmental delays in children include cognitive, emotional, motor skills, vision, and speech. Willis and Mitchell (2014) address sensory contributions to learning and how important these executive processes such as sight, touch, taste, smell, acoustics, and emotions are to learning. An individual can experience cognitive, emotional, motor skills, vision, and/or speech delays that affect their learning.
How does understanding sensory contributions to learning help you to design and deliver instruction for individuals with developmental delays? Offer at least one specific example using one of the developmental delays mentioned (cognitive, emotional, motor, vision, or speech). Note that there are several recommended resources that could help you to participate in this discussion.
Guided Response: Review at least two of your classmates’ posts and extend their learning by asking them to clarify their understanding, share an example or experience. Share an insight or something you learned from reading your classmates’ posts or from the text that helps to clarify your think

ESE 370 Week 3 Assignment Emotions are Critical NEW
Emotions play a large part in the learning process. Emotions impact how we learn and the information that we are able to retain. Our brains are highly sensitive to each of our emotional states. Educators should be aware of these issues and how they, as educators, can influence the emotional states of their students. Write a four page paper on how emotions are critical to learning including attention, memory, and meaning.
Your paper must demonstrate the following points:
• Identify and discuss the part(s) of the brain impacted by emotions.
• Evaluate how emotions influence learning, memory, attention, and meaning.
• Discuss how to build a positive emotional climate in the classroom.
You must use and cite at least two scholarly sources in addition to the course text. Your paper should be a minimum of four pages with proper formatting according to the 6th edition of the APA style manual (including Times New Roman, 12 point font, with double line spacing and one inch margins).
The paper must also demonstrate clear writing with proper grammar, sentence, structure, paragraph development, and essay organization (introduction with thesis statement and conclusion that summarizes main points).

ESE 370 Week 2 Discussion 2 Gender Differences in Learning Debate NEW

Gender Differences in Learning Debate [CLOs: 2, 5 & 7]. 1st Post Due by Day 3.
There are known differences in cerebral laterality between males and females. Although our brains are unique, some believe it is politically incorrect to say there are gender differences while others assert that male and female brains are different. For some educators and policy makers, it’s easy choice; we should have same-sex schools. For others, brain-based research raises questions about instructional design, teacher qualifications, class size, and instructional strategies. This discussion has three parts, so be sure to note the required reflection near the end of the week.
Two of the recommend resources may help you to contribute to this discussion:
Salomone (2007) and Gurian, Henley, &Trueman (2001). Both of these resources are available in ebrary through the Ashford Library.

Initial post: Describe the gender-based differences in the brain’s executive processes during problem solving and critical thinking. Then, based on your debate group assigned below, use the course materials and at least one other scholarly source from the Ashford library to justify whether these differences dictate a need to change our educational policies and teaching strategies.
Peer responses: Read your peers’ initial posts and respond substantively to the initial posts of at least two peers. At least one of your peer responses must be to a peer assigned to the group opposite the one to which you were assigned. In your peer responses, evaluate the quality of their argument. Did they adequately justify their assigned positions? What scholarly information can you offer to support or refute their position? It is important to demonstrate critical thinking in your peer responses.
Reflection post: Follow several of the conversations developing in the discussion. Near the end of the week, reply to your own initial post with a reflection on the debate. Where do you stand now on the issues? Do you agree with the assertion of the group to which you were assigned? Did your position change? Describe the process of reflection you underwent; what research and which conversations influenced your position?
Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts. Respond to at least two of your classmates. Challenge your classmates by asking a question that may cause them to reevaluate or confirm their understanding of the stimuli or strategy they have chosen. Extend their learning by making a suggestion for an additional strategy/or stimuli that would help to make learning more effective.

ESE 370 Week 2 Discussion 1 Sensorimotor Integration NEW

Sensorimotor Integration [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 & 9]. 1st Post Due by Day 3.
Sensorimotor integration is fundamental to school success and learning. Think about the importance of sensorimotor integration to teaching, learning, and memory. Using the course materials, justify why you believe sensory stimulation is so important to include in lesson design and planning. Provide an example of a stimulus or specific strategy you would implement within your classroom (as an instructional designer or facilitator/teacher) to make learning more effective. Be very specific in explaining how these stimuli would improve student learning and how you believe this strategy addresses brain-based learning.
Be sure to analyze the brain’s role in motor cognition and stimulation and the relationship to teaching and learning. In addition to Chapter 2 of the Willis and Mitchell (2014) textbook, Chapter 4 of the Jensen text and Chapter 5 of the Given text, which are listed in the recommend resources section, may help you to address this discussion.

Human Development and the Process of Learning [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7]. 1st Post Due by Day 3.
Our working memory is a significant component to learning new information. Working memory is complex as it encompasses many areas of the brain. It is oftentimes considered a central executive, a phonological loop, a visiospatial sketchpad, and an episodic buffer (Willis & Mitchell, 2014). Discuss the process of working memory including the areas of the brain associated with short-term memory and encoding. Then explain two techniques you can use in your professional practice that would help improve and strengthen short-term memory.
In addition to the Willis and Mitchell (2014) textbook, Chapter 9 of the Wolfe (2010) book may also be useful. As indicated in the recommended resources for this week, the Wolfe text is available from ebrary in the Ashford Library.
Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts and identify some key point(s) you agree with. Respond to at least two of your classmates and provide recommendations to extend their thinking. Challenge your classmates by asking a question that may cause them to reevaluate or rethink their understanding of child development, brain functions, and the process of learning.

Brain-Based Learning and Literacy [CLOs: 1, 3 &5 ]. 1st Post Due by Day 3.
\Brain-based teaching and learning is a new paradigm of pedagogy. It is one of the most exciting fields in the world of brain research, based on research from the disciplines of neuroscience, biology, and psychology. Brain based learning is an approach that explains how the brain naturally learns best. Locate an article in the Ashford online Library that investigates research in brain development and its relation to learning and literacy. Provide a summary of the article and explain how the findings can be translated into what an educator can do to enhance learning and literacy.
Do your findings support what you know about brain functions in the process of learning? Why or why not? If you need assistance using the library to find an article, please watch this library tutorial, Choosing Articles and Revising Results.
Guided Response: Review at least two of your classmates’ posts and analyze the connections they made to brain functions in the process of learning. Do you agree or disagree with their analysis? Why or why not? Relate their findings to your own.

Brain-Based Innovating Teaching and Learning Strategies [CLOs: 3 & 4]. 1st Posting Due by Day 3.
Chapter Six of the textbook (Willis & Mitchell, 2014) discussed strategies to increase active participation and responsive students in the classroom. One barrier to active participation and responsive engagement is “mistake fear.” After reading the textbook, describe a time when you experienced mistake fear. As you describe your experience, think of the description as a picture you need to paint with vivid details to help us understand your experience. After describing the experience in detail, use the strategies suggested in the textbook to discuss how you can help students (through instructional design or facilitation/teaching) who may also experience this phenomenon (mistake fear).
Guided Response: Review at least two of your classmates’ posts and evaluate the strategies they suggested. Ask your classmates to clarify any confusing elements of their posting and point out any strategies you feel are weak. Extend their thinking by making a suggestion for another strategy or how they can make their strategy stronger. Also, comment on their personal experience with mistake fear and explain how it might be similar/dissimilar to your experience.

Gamification of Learning [CLOs 3, 5, 7, & 9]. 1st Post Due by Day 3.
In Chapter 4 of the textbook, Willis and Mitchell (2014) discuss the role of video games in learning. While some folks think that gamification is a recent trend, we can find examples of “gamified learning” from the mid-1980s (Knewton, n.d.). Gamification, as the trend is sometimes called, can be an effective tool for instructional designers, teachers, trainers, and facilitators; and it can also be called a useless distraction, pointsification, or mandatory fun. This discussion will be a debate about the merits of gamification in learning.
Debate Grouping (based on the first letter of your last name): A-L: Argue against the use of gamification in learning
M-Z: Argue in support gamification in learning
In your initial post, use research about how the brain learns to justify the appropriateness or inappropriateness of gaming as a learning tool. Whichever position you take, be sure to support your justification with information from the textbook (Willis & Mitchell, 2014) or other scholarly sources such as the Bruder (2015) article listed in the recommended resources section.
Guided Response: Respond to the initial posts of at least two of your peers who were assigned the opposite side of the debate. Draw on brain research to persuade your peer to see your assigned perspective.
