Government measures to tackle inequality
Baby box, pupil equity fund , minimum unit pricing of alcohol
Baby box
Introduced in 2017, made to help support families with the essentials they could not afford. This can be shown by the fact that 220,000 families have been helped by the baby box with 9/10 families saying it has saved them money.
Many argue not all families need the baby box, they believe the baby box shouldn’t be universal and means tested instead.
Pupil equity fund
Introduced in 2016, aim was to provide opportunities for children from P1-S3 who were in poverty or received free school meals. For every child with free school meals the school received £1200 to spend on the pupil. This money was spent on literacy, well-being & health.
However, many children who are in poverty just miss out on this benefit & therefore will still be in poverty and not real the rewards of this measure.
