What is the order of the Aufbau diagram?
1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p
How many electrons in s?
One pair of two.
How many electrons in p?
Three pairs of two (six all altogether).
How many electrons in d?
Five pairs of two (ten all together).
How do you figure out how many valence electrons are in groups?
In Groups 1 and 2, it is simply the same (in Group 1, there is only 1, in Group 2, there are 2).
However, in Groups 13-18, minus the group number by 10 (eg. In Group 15, 15-10 is 5. There are 5 valence electrons).
What is responsible for the periodicity of element properties?
The electronic configuration of elements (the similarity in the valence shell structure gives the elements similar chemical properties).
What does the number of a period tell us?
The number of a period gives information about the electronic configuration of an element. The period that an element is located within is equal to the number of occupied electron shells in the element’s atoms.
What information does a block give?
The block an element is in tells us the element’s highest energy subshell (which is the same name as the block).
