What are esters formed from
A
Alcohol + carboxylic acids react
E.g. ethanol + ethanoic acid = ethyl ethanoate + water

How can you make esters in the lab
A
Add a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid to a boiling tube using a dropping pipette
Add 10 drops of ethanoic acid
Add an equal volume of ethanol
Place the tube in a beaker of water
Heat the Bunsen burner until the water starts to boil
After 1 minute, remove the tube and allow it to cool
Once its cool, pour the mixture into a test tube of sodium carbonate solution and mix
A layer of ester should form at the top

What are uses of esters
A
They smell nice and are volatile so they are used in perfumes
They are also used to make food flavourings
