What is informed consent
Participants should be informed of all aspects of the study so they can make an informed judgement on the research
How do you deal with informed consent
Consent forms which has all the information about the research
What is the right to withdraw
Participants have a right to stop taking part in the research at any time
How do you deal with the right to withdraw
Researchers should clearly specify at the start and then continue to remind participants of their right to withdraw
What is deception
Researchers can’t deliberately mislead / keep information from participants
How do you deal with deception
Give participants as much information about the research as possible make sure all details are provided
What is presumptive consent
Asking people who are similar to the participants if they would take part in the research then assuming that others (the participants) would
What is prior general consent
Asking people who volunteer to take part general questions e.g. “would you be part of a study where you were deliberately mislead?”
What is retrospective consent
Giving participants a full debrief after the study and asking them to consent to their data being used in the research
What is confidentiality
Any information about a participant is confidential
How do you deal with confidentiality
Researchers must make sure that all personal data about participants stays protected
What is protection of participants
Researchers must protect participants from physical and psychological harm
How do you deal with protection of participants
Make sure procedure is safe and that participants will not be harmed
What is debriefing (not an ethical issue)
Allows for participants to fully understand what happened in the experiment and for researchers to monitor any unforeseen negative affects
