Respect (definition + examples)
Professional displays esteem for their patients, for other professionals and also for themselves.
Ex.
P: leave room while the patient is undressing, follow patient wishes, and talk in private
O: Watch comments and respect other professional’s work
S: Know your own limits and practice self-care
Client Autonomy and Self-Determination
The patient has the right to decide about their Tx and has the right to be given sufficient info to make that decision.
Ex.
-Provide enough information for informed consent
-Ensure the patient is capable of making an informed choice
-Follow the patient’s wishes, and respect massage details
Veracity
The patient has the right to be made aware of any details that will aid them in making an informed choice.
Ex.
-Tell the truth of your skills and experiences
-Results of Tx
-Limits/problems of Tx
-Refer when out of scope
Proportionality
Benefits must outweigh any burdens of obtaining/receiving Tx
Ex.
-Cost
-Location
-Accessibility
Nonmaleficence
MT will do no harm as well as preventing harm.
Ex.
-Maintain equipment
-Avoid allergens
-Keep the area safe
-Clean area + linens
-Depth = tolerance level
-Refer when out of scope
Beneficence
Any Tx is strictly for the patient’s well-being
Ex. Choose the appropriate Tx
Confidentiality
All patient info is to be kept confidential unless its release was authorized by the patient
Ex.
-Keep files secure
-No info released unless authorized
-Talk privately
-Only say hello in public, any other conversation is up to the patient
Justice
All patients are to be treated fairly
Ex.
-Sliding rates based on patients situation
-Same care/concern for all patients
-Same Tx regardless of age, race, size, gender, orientation, ability, etc.
